Teaching Philosophy

We believe it is essential for students to acquire the “Reading to Learn and Learning to Read” skills. We aim to turn them into independent learners who are able to develop good habits of learning and self-learning skills. Catering for students’ diverse learning needs is an important part of our teaching because we want to nurture students’ interest and confidence in learning English.

Teachers' Sharing

For our students, learning English is not an easy task. We believe that it is essential to build up their foundational language skills and to extend and sustain their learning interests through self-learning skills. To achieve this goal, we have developed a school-based ‘Better English Curriculum’ for our Key Stage One (KS1) students. There are 3 components in the Better English Curriculum: Blended Learning e-Curriculum, Phonics Curriculum, and Library Reading Curriculum. All three curricula are interconnected and the language and generic skills are transferable.

School-based Blended Learning e-Curriculum

Since 2014, we have developed a school-based English e-Curriculum for Key Stage 1 students. The e-Curriculum adopts a ‘Blended teaching and learning’ approach, which is used also for the Phonics Curriculum and the Library Reading Curriculum. Students take advantage of the traditional face-to-face classroom learning with the support of the teacher, while enjoying the flexibility and extended resources that e-learning provides. The curriculum caters for individual differences and encourages students to work collaboratively in groups for the e-learning activities. There are many possibilities and opportunities provided for extended and independent learning as students can access the materials outside the classroom and use the resources at their own pace. Students’ motivation is enhanced because they take an active role in their learning.

School-based Phonics Curriculum

To provide our students with the building blocks and foundational skills to learn and speak English, we have designed a school-based Phonics Curriculum that extends from P.1 to P.6. It aims to develop students’ listening and speaking competence, independent learning and self-efficacy. Students build up their chunking skills in phonics and the confidence they gain in pronouncing even unfamiliar words has a profound impact on nurturing themselves into independent readers. To support the phonics learning of our students in school and at home, we have developed an interactive Phonics Apps, “Magic Chunking Bee”, to support and complement the teaching and learning of phonics.

Library Reading Curriculum

We teach students the prerequisite reading skills so that they can learn to read independently. Our library lessons are based on small group teaching with 3 teachers employing shared reading, guided reading, and Reciprocal Teaching strategies for students with different reading abilities. Reading opens doors to knowledge and learning. This is evident in our school-based Library Reading Curriculum where students apply reading and phonics skills in the reading lessons. We conduct assessments of students’ reading abilities at regular intervals and help students develop good habits of reading levelled fiction and non-fiction texts that best suit them.

We believe that making students independent learners helps them overcome challenges and difficulties in study. The learning tools and skills they have acquired can go beyond classroom into their daily lives.
